Ballet Concerto presents Lecture/Demonstrations designed for students in elementary, schools. The program demonstrates the art of ballet in an educational and entertaining manner through demonstration and commentary. As it traces the history of ballet from the beginning, it will enrich the student's understanding of dance and its place in our society today. Like music and painting, dance is a reflection of the generation in which it is produced. Ballet began in the 17th Century during the reign of Catherine de Medici in Italy. It was first danced by and for the nobility. Therefore, all of the movements were elegant and formal. Ballet training, because it is classical, is the same now as it was in the beginning. However, through time, choreographers have adapted the classical movements to produce ballets that correspond to changing times.
The performance will include a demonstration how dancers begin their daily exercises as well as excerpts from classical ballets, La Sylphide and The Sleeping Beauty Ballet. Dancers will then delight the audience with Western Sweet, a ballet performed to a selection of country western music. To conclude the program, selected students will be invited to join the dancers on stage to try out some steps.

Professional dancers, along with young ballet aspirants, will perform. Background material will be sent one week prior to the program. The package will include a brief description of ballet, suggested activities and audience etiquette.
